RVA Fashion Week Fashion Designer: Harry Trinh

Mosquito netting and lace curtains are not the first things that come to mind when most people think of a runway show. Local fashion designer, Harry Trinh, is changing that though. Trinh is showing his Spring/ Summer 2012 collection titled Gridded Organza next Saturday as a part of RVA Fashion Week.

The ten dress collection that Trinh is creating for the show features spray painted mosquito netting, lace and large amounts of hand beading. His inspiration for the collection stems from the “unique bond yet struggle humans have with nature” and how society has created a very structured sense of nature and organic life. He is also interested in the idea of “the industrial filth that is produced as a byproduct of making a piece of clothing”, a sort of gritty elegance that goes back to the human and nature relationship.

Trinh’s design process is also very unique. Getting most of the supplies to create his dresses from hardware and thrift stores, he prefers to not work from sketches or patterns but rather drapes solely on his dress form. Each dress in the collection has a sheer and feminine early 20th century vibe to them that is sweet and soft in terms of shape and are nicely contrasted with the harsh and industrial feel of the fabrics.

Trinh commented that he was most looking forward to the audience reaction to the collection at the fashion show. He is shy to consider his creations couture though and refers to them more as wearable art. Either way, the end result is a stunning and distinctive piece of clothing.

When talking about Richmond fashion, Trinh says that he loves how uniquely people dress yet there is still a sense of community and unity to everyone. He also compared Richmond style to the Fan neighborhood with the fact that both have a pristine exterior look yet underneath it all, there is a quirky and slightly grungy feel.

Trinh is a senior at Henrico High School’s Center for the Arts and plans to attend Maryland Institute College of Art for architectural design in the fall.

Harry Trinh is showing his collection at 7:00pm on Saturday, April 21 at the Hippodrome Theater as a part of the Final Showcase event for RVA Fashion Week. Tickets to the event can be purchased online at:
